The Damned
The Damned is a British band formed in 1976 in London. The band was founded by Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Brian James, and Rat Scabies. The group is considered one of the pioneers of British punk rock and released the single New Rose in 1976, which is regarded as the first British punk single. This was followed in 1977 by their debut album Damned Damned Damned, which was succeeded by Music for Pleasure (1977), Machine Gun Etiquette (1979), and The Black Album (1980).
During the 1980s, the band expanded its musical style to include elements of gothic rock, psychedelic rock, and new wave. During this period, they released the albums Strawberries (1982), Phantasmagoria (1985), and Anything (1986). The band went on hiatus several times and changed its lineup, with singer Dave Vanian remaining the only constant member. In the following decades, they continued their live and studio work with the albums Grave Disorder (2001), So, Who’s Paranoid? (2008), Evil Spirits (2018), and Darkadelic (2023).
The band’s current work is centered around the album Not Like Everybody Else, released in January 2026. The recording was created as a tribute album dedicated to the late founding guitarist Brian James, who died in 2025. The album features cover versions of songs by The Kinks, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, and The Animals. The recording features Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies, Paul Gray, and Monty Oxymoron.
