The orchestra, founded by Gustav Brom (Frkal), began its professional career with an engagement in June 1940 at the Radhošt' Hotel in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. At that time nobody probably expected that this band would play under Brom's leadership until his death in September 1995. Already in the first decades of its existence the band gained a worldwide reputation. In the 1960s it was ranked by American experts among the 10 best big bands in the world. Maynard Fergusson, Dizzy Gilespie, Dianna Ross and The Supremes, Ray Conniff, Ben Cramer, VOX, Bill Ramsey and others have been the biggest stars of jazz and pop...
Under the leadership of conductor Vlad Valovic in the new millennium, the band continues to spread the glory and honor of the name Gustav Brom. In 2010, the orchestra celebrated its 70th anniversary, so this year it celebrates its half-century. Throughout its rich history, a great number of musicians have passed through its ranks. Even today, new players are joining the orchestra, gaining invaluable experience while maintaining the eternally young spirit of the band. New modern arrangements are added to the programme and the repertoire is constantly evolving. This is the future of the Gustav Brom Big Band. In 2013, the Gustav Brom Big Band became the resident ensemble of Czech Radio under the name of the Gustav Brom Radio Big Band.
