Richie Hawtin

Richie Hawtin rose to prominence in the early 1990s under the alias Plastikman in the second wave of Detroit techno producers, which also included musicians such as Jeff Mills and Carl Craig; during this time he also founded the Plus 8 label, which released a lot of the important releases associated with the scene. From the very beginning, however, he was an exploratory producer: his debut longplay Dimension Intrusion (released under the alias F.U.S.E.) was released on Warp Records and fit into the then still-not-fully-crystallised sound of IDM. In the mid-nineties, he went in a different direction, becoming one of the main exponents of minimal techno and bringing the genre out of Detroit into the leviathan clubs of Germany and Ibiza; he thus became one of the most emblematic and in-demand figures of mainstream techno. By the 2000s, he was composing music for the Olympics opening ceremony, playing at the Guggenheim and creating installations with Anish Kapoor. He has also collaborated with Daniel Bell, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos and Robert Henke, among others.
