At a time when most British bands were playing lad rock in the vein of Oasis, Placebo were inspired by glam and Depeche Mode; frontman Brian Molko openly explored sexuality and drugs in their lyrics and broke gender conventions with his androgynous look and sound. This reticence has paid off, and in some circles Placebo have amassed a cult following. They have eight studio albums and collaborations with the likes of David Bowie to their credit; their latest release, Never Let Me Go (2022), is their first album recorded as a duo; it has been called a return to form and Placebo's best album since Meds (2006) by the NME.
