Pantera
Pantera is an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed in 1981 and currently consisting of vocalist Phil Anselmo, bassist Rex Brown, and touring musicians Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.
As the preeminent metal band of the early to mid-90s, Pantera laid to rest any remnants of the '80s metal scene and almost single-handedly destroyed any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, etc. were anything but passé. The Texan band, reluctant to admit it, was in fact one of those '80s metal bands that had released fairly unsuccessful (and later frowned upon) glam-inspired music for much of the decade. The turnaround came with the addition of vocalist Phil Anselmo, and the decisive turning point was the major-label debut Cowboys from Hell (1990). Pantera's mainstream breakthrough then came with Vulgar Display of Power (1992), their second major-label album, which propelled the band to the top of the metal scene, alongside veteran bands like Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer and Anthrax, as well as up-and-coming bands Sepultura and White Zombie. When Pantera released Far Beyond Driven (1994) after two long years of touring, they were the most popular metal band in the country: The new album landed at the top of the Billboard Top 200, while the lead single I'm Broken received massive airplay.
