Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian
Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian is a Kurdish tanbur player from the city of Kermanshah in western Iran. He was born into a family of musical instrument makers and was surrounded by the traditional music of the Horaman region from an early age. He studied with several well-known masters and later enrolled at the University of Tehran, where he focuses on the study of Persian classical music, particularly râdif and the performance of setar and tār.
In 2021, he released his debut album Songs of Horaman, which was recorded in the city of Karaj with percussionist Behzad Varasteh. The album features a blend of traditional tasnifs and maqams and was originally released on cassette by the European label Radio Khiyaban. It was later distributed on vinyl in collaboration with the labels Centripetal Force (USA), Cardinal Fuzz (UK), and Ramble Records (Australia).
In March 2025, he released his second album Noor-e Vojood, recorded at Bell Studio in Tehran. On this album, he collaborated with dohól player Morteza Rezaei, and most of the recordings were made in a single take. The album includes pieces such as Darâmad, Sokoot e Hayâhoo, and Dar Tamannâye Eshgh.
Heydarian performed at the Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht in 2025, where he presented his tanbur compositions inspired by traditional maqams and connected to the spiritual elements of Yarsan music.
