Modern Soul Band
In 1968, bassist Eugen Hahn and Hugo Laartz founded the band. In the beginning, they were musically oriented towards the soul greats Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and James Brown. At first they "only" played tracks. At the beginning of the 1970s, MSB developed their own line. Along with the line-up Hugo Laartz/keyb/voc, Eugen Hahn/bass, Charly Rath/dr Hansi Biebl/guit, Jochen Gleichmann/tp, Caspar Hansmann/sax, Conny Bauer/tb and the expressive singer Klaus Nowodworski, they advanced to become one of the most popular and most-produced bands of the former GDR.
Contrary to musical trends, they still stick to the three-wind section typical of MSB and thus remain unmistakable, despite frequent changes of musicians (about 100). After Klaus Nowodworski, "Onion" Christian Schmidt with his distinctive "Jo Cocker voice" joined MSB as the new frontman in 1983. Both singers have died in the meantime.
Many concerts and tours at home and abroad were the order of the day until 1990. Often, in the past as well as today, we played with guest soloists like: Veronika Fischer, Angelika Weiz, Uschi Brüning, Ernst "Luten" Petrowski, Friedhelm Schönfeld, Rosay Wotham, Peter Pabst, Christiane Ufholz and Klaus Lenz.
In 1973 and 1977 the band merged with Klaus Lenz to form the Big Band.
