Maxim Gorki Theater

The Maxim Gorki Theater, located in the district Berlin-Mitte, is the smallest state theatre of Berlin. It holds 440 seats and is situated in the premises of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. Due to its history as the venue of the choir, the theatre is still sometimes referred to as Singakademie.

The theatre was founded in 1952 as a contemporary theatre and developed into an important institution for East Berlin, being critical and dissident. Being very historically aware, the Maxim Gorki Theater still lays stress on the issue of Berlin’s present and future as an European metropolis in its content.
