Mammal Hands
Mammal Hands is an English jazz trio. It was formed in 2012 in the East Anglian city of Norwich. The band consists of Jordan Smart on saxophone, Nick Smart on keyboards and Jesse Barrett on drums and tabla.
The year after forming, they signed to Gondwana Records, where they have since released five critically acclaimed albums, most recently 2023's Gift from the Trees. Their unique sound has received glowing recommendations from such respected yet diverse artists as Bonobo, Tom Ravenscroft, Jamie Cullum and Gilles Peterson. Inspired by jazz, contemporary classical, electronica and minimalism, Mammal Hands swear by such names as Pharoah Sanders, Gétachèw Mekurya, Terry Riley and Steve Reich. Underneath all of these acknowledged influences, however, they have created their own inimitable style, in which all three are equally involved and which they expand and deepen from album to album.
Mammal Hands' intense and hypnotic live performances have received great acclaim in Japan, China, USA, Canada, Thailand and throughout Europe. They have also performed at such renowned venues as The Barbican in London, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, Shanghai's Modern Skylab, Cologne's Philharmonie, La Cigale in Paris, and the prestigious Montreux and Montreal festivals.
