JJ Grey & Mofro
JJ Grey's musical career is admirable - he's worked his way up from playing cover versions when he was working in a lumberyard in West Jacksonville, Florida, to selling out big halls and music festivals around the world. Already his 2001 debut album Blackwater delivered what is characteristic of JJ Grey's music - songs based on southern rock with a sprinkling of funk and soul. At the time, he was still performing under the moniker Mofro, the name Grey used to describe his music and sound. After a while, he used the same name for his band, which was made up of professional musicians. He released five albums on the Alligator Records label, then switched to the Provogue label. JJ Grey & Mofro has performed at many festivals including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Austin City Limits Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival in Australia, Montreal Jazz Festival and Fuji Rock in Japan. He has shared the stage with such musicians as Lenny Kravitz, B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Jeff Beck, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples and many more. His songs have appeared in films and television projects such as House of Cards, Criminal Minds, Crash, The Gray Man and Flashpoint. Gray is an avid fisherman, artist, surfer and active environmentalist at the seashore.
The album Olustee was written eight years later and Grey produced it himself for the first time. He sings on it his personal stories with universal themes of redemption, rebirth, bad luck and inner peace. In his music, Grey also celebrates good times with friends, often blending carnality and sensuality with reflection. Grey's gritty baritone overflows with sincere passion with an almost preachy fervor. With Olustee, JJ Grey has once again pushed the boundaries of his own creative musical, lyrical and vocal talents.
