Foyer Red
Hailing from Brooklin, Foyer Red create music that is both sweet and oppressive, taking listeners to surprising places. Their songs are full of unexpected twists and turns, shifting metre, bass lines and guitar riffs that rasp and shimmer at the same time, and seamlessly intertwined vocal parts. Even when their songs approach the limits of chaos, they are deftly tamed by catchy melodies and an inventive, unconventional approach to pop songwriting. Foyer Red is a perfect example of a brilliantly structured hustle.
Foyer Red originally recorded as a trio consisting of: Elana Riordan on vocals and clarinet, Marco Ocampo on drums and Mitch Myers on vocals and guitar. The collaboration started by email: they would send each other ideas for tracks and record separately the ones they thought were best. In 2021, they started meeting in the same room to record and almost immediately released their debut EP Zigzag Wombat, which Pitchfork received very enthusiastically, writing: They make fuck-you crayon rock. At its best, their debut is a little bit freaky and more than a little bit funny. Although they had only existed as a band for a few months, their DIY-recorded, charming debut showed that they could immediately be considered a fully-formed project with a distinctive, playful and deconstructive approach to indie rock.
Rather than sticking to an already tried-and-tested instrumental scheme, Foyer Red evolved from a trio into a five-piece line-up, inviting vocalist and guitarist Kristina Moore and bassist Eric Jaso to join them. As a quintet, Foyer Red's songs have become even richer in sonic ideas and more intriguing. This is all thanks to their egalitarian approach to songwriting, where each member can share and develop their ideas.
