Danny Brown
The Detroit rapper Danny Brown became a key fixture of the alternative hip-hop scene in the 2010s, with his instantly recognizable voice and a sensibility toeing the line between street cred and Pitchfork acclaim. Brown gained prominence through his prolific mixtape output in the 2000s; after would-be deals with mainstream hip-hop labels Roc-A-Fella and G-Unit (including a mixtape with G-Unit's Tony Yayo) fell through, he signed to the Brooklyn indie Fool's Gold for his second album XXX (2011), gaining major recognition in the independent scene. The follow-up LPs – Old (2013), Atrocity Exhibition (2016) and U Know What I'm Sayin? (2019) – became key positions of the alt rap canon, with vivid, psychedelic production accompanying his intense and paranoid persona. 2023 saw Brown release two records – Scaring the Hoes, a collaboration with fellow alt rap figurehead JPEGMafia, and the solo LP Quaranta, seeing the rapper at his most introspective so far.
