His father was a jazz pianist and composer, his mother sang in a gospel choir, and soon began himself to sing and play several instruments. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, where he formed the band Rising Sons with guitarist Ry Cooder. They opened a number of important musicians and young Taj is thus familiar with many blues legends.
