Temple Rat
Mei Yuxin, better known as Temple Rat, is a Shanghai-based DJ, producer and musician. She grew up near the vibrant megacity Chengdu in the west Chinese Sichuan basin. At the age of nine she began to learn playing Erhu, a traditional Chinese folk instrument with two strings, played with a bow made from carved wood and snake skin. The mysterious instrument is sometimes described as a Chinese violin in the Western world.
Inspired by her passion for Chengdu's hyped underground clubs, Mei started exploring a combination of traditional Chinese folk music and minimalist techno tunes. She often starts her sets with the sounds of the Erhu to create a sense of space, mystery and surprise among the audience. Then she gradually adds electronic and industrial sounds and instruments to fill the space with sensations and take the audience on a journey through atmospheres.
Mei has been developing her skills towards a unique blend of Erhu live performances and electronic beats. She began performing as Temple Rat in 2015 with music influenced by sparks of the natural and the religious environment she grew up in, further inspired by ancient oriental rhythms as well as acid elements.
Her career has brought her to cities all over China to Europe with performances at various renowned festivals like ADE or the Spanish Summer Story Festival.
