Take That

The almost 30-year history of Take That is one of the most exciting and unpredictable in British music history. It's a story of close friendships and deep quarrels, breathtaking successes and surprises. In England alone, the band has so far 80 times platinum for their albums and singles, but also in Germany four of their longplayers made up to the top 4 hit lists – above all the two albums Beautiful World and Progress, which both got platinum honors. In 2017, the band, since 2014 just a trio, published the eighth album Wonderland, which, as usual, has become an international bestseller.

The British music manager Nigel Martin-Smith wanted to break 1990 in the supremacy of American boy bands and establish a male vocal group in England. It all started with the gifted Gary Barlow, who had been composing songs since he was seven years old. With Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, the other heads were recruited for Take That and they went straight to the studio. Already the debut album Take That & Party became a full success and charted the hit list on second place. Three of its hit singles soon became classics, just like the cover Could it be magic.

With the second album, Everything Changes, in 1993 the relentless triumph of Take That startet. As many as four single releases topped the UK charts, the album reached the Top 10 in Europe. After only three years, the quintet had reached the top of the European pop superstars. The successor in 1995 was even more successful, the single Back For Good topped the charts in 31 nations. They have won numerous BRIT and MTV Europe Music awards and were one of the most successful live acts in the mid-90s. It seemed like they achieved everything that there is to achieve. Which in the end also led to their break up in February 1996.

Ten years after their demise, the members met again for a BBC documentary about Take That. Old quarrels were settled, they were more mature, older, more relaxed – and so they planned a new tour, which made history one of the most popular pop music and the comeback album Beautiful World. With this work they managed to – at first still without Williams – easily follow up on the old successes.

After the fifth album, which was also internationally successful, even the lost fifth man Williams returned for two years. It was followed by a tour and the recorded album Progress, which is considered Take That's most successful work in history ever. Williams and Jason Orange 2014, finally left the band. Since then, the remaining three convinced with the two albums III (2014) and Wonderland (2017) that Take That also works wonderfully as a trio.
