Samuli Kemppi
Samuli Kemppi is a Helsinki-based producer, DJ, radio host, promoter and label owner. The techno aficionado with over 30 releases, numerous remixes and gigs from Buenos Aires to Shanghai, Samuli is one of the best known techno exports from Finland. He specializes in deep, hypnotic techno.
He is one half of Deep Space Helsinki, an FM radio show he co-hosts alongside Juho Kusti. The show also spawned a label offshoot with the same name.
Kemppi grew up in Lahti, a city about 100km North of Helsinki. Like many techno producers in their late 30s, his introduction to genre came through illegal warehouse parties in the early 90s. He began buying records, and DJing hard techno music. Later, he developed his style towards a deep, minimalist, spacious sound.
Soon after, he also started producing his own records. Together with his wife he dropped five 12"s as Sam & Gigi, debuting with Come & Dance on US label Siesta Music in 2002. In the early 2000s, Kemppi and Gigi moved to Helsinki to explore the cultural possibilities of the city.
Over 15 labels have released Kemppi's music, with each release coming after he had been approached by an imprint. Then, he would start working with the special sound of the label in mind.
