A new exhibition at the Museum of Warsaw's Praga brings Manitius' ahead-of-its-time designs and the Prague company's design projects closer to the public.

Since the 1920s, the Praga toy factory has produced extraordinary objects. Designed by Edward Manitius, the toys, school aids and advertising gadgets for companies were distinguished by their innovation and quality. An exhibition devoted to these multifunctional objects will be on display at the Museum of Warsaw's Praga from 2 December. The box animals in which you could find Wedel chocolates, the clever Wesko balls and the imagination-stimulating Hocki-klocki – the original designs by Edward Manitius from a century ago still delight us today. These are unobvious objects: eye-catching toys and boxes at the same time, applied art objects, objects of educational value, as well as advertising gadgets. The exhibition Thing to Play With. Edward Manitius and his factory will be the first presentation of the largest collection of works and memorabilia of the Warsaw artist in Poland.

The exhibition Things to Play With. Edward Manitius and his factory tells the story of the Factory of Toys and Ornamental Products, founded in 1926. It presents its way of functioning in a family tenement house, its cooperation with well-known confectionery manufacturers, its triumph at the 1939 World Exhibition in New York, and its experiences in the post-war years in the changed political and economic system. The exhibition showcases 160 objects. Through animal figurines, designs, drawings, games and toys, as well as photographs and press clippings, the story of Edward Manitius' innovative approach – to design and toys, but also to advertising and the business model – is told. The background to this unique story is Praga, where Manitius lived and worked in a tenement house on Kępna Street.

The characteristic features of Manitius' products are multifunctionality and breaking patterns in thinking about a utilitarian object. The exhibition will also feature projects by students of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. They were inspired by Manitius' ideas - starting from the idea of a traditional wooden hollow toy or a construction puzzle, they created objects that entertain and teach.
