Before the pianist Roy Assaf pushed on the musical scene a few years ago, he enthusiastically welcomed the Jazz Masters Kenny Barron and Jason Moran. As a sideman he had 20 albums, when the Jazz Legacy Productions released the album “Respect”, on which he performs as a bandleader with his superb musicians. It’s Reuben Rogers (bass), Greg Hutchinson (drums) and guest Roy Hargrove (trumpet) and Eric Alexander (saxophone).
Roy came to New York in the fall of 2005 with a desire for a musical career. Soon got an invitation to attend a European tour as a pianist with the band Dizzy Gillespie All Stars. Performed in 13 cities, then in Canada, Puerto Rico and a week in the famous Blue Note in NYC. Since then, Roy appears as with small groups, as well as with bigbandy at various venues and festivals around the world. As a pianist in the famous groups had the honor of sharing the stage with legendary regularly as Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Slide Hampton, Roy Hargrove, Antonio Hart, and many others. In addition, featured a number of world-renowned together with musicians, among them are Randy Brecker, Lewis Nash, t. s. Monk, Barry Harris, Dr. Billy Taylor, Claudio Roditi, Steve Davis, John Lee, Ron Carter, Wallace Roney, Buster Williams and Trilok Gurtu.
Among the many recognitions, that Roy has won include the 31st Annual Downbeat Student Award for Outstanding Performance, 2008 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Award, 2nd place honor for the Charlie Palmieri Memorial Piano Competition, Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute Award, America-Israel Cultural Foundation Prize for Young Israeli Musicians, and the 30th Annual Downbeat Student Award for Best Jazz Arrangement.
Roy currently plays in the bands: Dizzy Gillespie All Stars, Claudio Roditi Quartet, Roberta Gambarini Quartet, Winard Harper Sextet, John Lee Sharel Cassity Quartet, Quintet, Victor Bastidas Project, Alex Terrier Quartet, Augmented Reality, Michael Dease Big Band and NYConnection.
