Rey Sapienz
Rey Sapienz is originally from Nord Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he started rapping and performing to Congolese soukous music as a child. In 2012, he travelled to Kampala to work with local producers, but was unable to return to Congo due to the war and extended his stay in Uganda. He is now a resident and producer at Nyege Nyege Tapes, as well as the label's manager. Over the years, he has developed a unique approach to the Congolese dance genres of soukous and kalindula, blending them with dark, driving techno, live dancehall rhythms and synths; he calls his style 'Congo techno'. He has two EPs to his credit - Hakuna Kulala (2017) and Mushoro (2019) - and one full-length album, released in 2024 on Nyege Nyege.
