Rafael Toral
Rafael Toral is a Portuguese producer, composer and performer who, since the 1990s, has occupied a position between expressive musical expressions and boundless and free experimentation. In his early works, such as the 1995 cult album Wave Field, he found a harmony between ambient and rock. In 2004, Toral took a new path, spending over 13 years developing his Space Program and designing an ansambl of extraterrestrial instruments. In 2024, he blew a layer of dust off his trusty guitar to create Spectral Evolution. On it, Toral draws on classic jazz chord progressions characteristic of George Gershiwn and Duke Ellington, but transforms and stretches them into soothing drone soundscapes enriched by choruses composed of 'post-Freejazz' electronic chirps.
