Paal Nilssen-Love
Paal Nilssen-Love literally grew up on jazz. He was just five years old in 1979 when his parents opened the Stavanger Jazzclub. A career in music was therefore a natural (and doped-up) choice. The young drummer began working with saxophonist Frode Gjerstad and trumpeter Didrik Ingvaldsen in 1990, three years before he began his formal jazz studies at Sund College Conservatory of Music in Trondheim. Undoubtedly one of the most important percussionists of the wider European free jazz scene in recent years and one of the most creative Norwegian musicians of the younger generation, he has performed and recorded with Ken Vandermark, Dave Rempis, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Sabir Mateen, Bobby Bradford, Jim O'Rourke, Terry Ex, Thurston Moore, Peter Brötzmann (Chicago Tenten), Evan Parker, Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), John Butcher, Jeb Bishop, Sten Sandell, Joe McPhee and Toshinori Kondo. Leader of the Large Unit big band. Also performs and records solo. Owner of the PNL Records label.
