Minimal Utopia

The Minimal Utopia Orkestra makes use of the sound of the streets of Berlin.

What happens when convinced folk artists deal with minimal music from the 1960s and 1970s as part of an art project, in this case with works by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Simeon ten Holt, Peter Michael Hamel or Hans Otte? A departure occurs. After almost a year of rehearsals, 17 artists from the Heimatlieder aus Deutschland ensemble play a dream of world music at Hebbel am Ufer (2017). Half a year later, a few musicians:inside the ensemble get together and rehearse first pieces, whose ideas are based on the common preparation time of the art project. The Musikfonds provides funding, and in early 2020 Berlin's Radialsystem is sold out for the premiere of Minimal Utopia Orkestra. Corona torpedoes further performances, but the MUO continues. In 2022 the first longplayer is released with own works and music elements from Serbia, Cuba, Germany, Cameroon, Vietnam, Morocco and Algeria and instruments like the monochord, the gimbri, the darbuka, the baglama or the quarquabas. But also drums, acoustic guitar and electronic beats play a role. And sometimes everything comes together in one piece.
