Mark Ernestus
Mark Ernestus is a German musician, music producer and music label owner. He became known in particular through the labels he founded with Moritz von Oswald such as Basic Channel, Chain Reaction, Main Street or Rhythm & Sound.
As a final thesis at the then College of the Arts, he opened 1987 the Kumpelnest 3000. In December 1989, Ernestus also opened the influential Berlin record store Hard Wax. From the early 1990s he produced together with Moritz von Oswald under numerous project names electronic music.
A broader public became aware of the techno label Basic Channel and Chain Reaction founded by Ernestus and Oswald. Above all, Basic Channel is considered one of the most important German techno label of the 1990s. The label's releases have all achieved cult status and are considered rarities, especially in North America. The music was mostly characterized by the deliberate use of reverb and noise effects.
With each new creative period, Oswald and Ernestus have established other labels, such as Main Street for Vocal House. The releases of this label surprised critics and fans. Instead of the minimalist techno sound, the first release I'm your brother was a classic house song with vocals by the British Andy Caine and had a certain pop appeal due to the catchy chorus.
Later on, Oswald and Ernestus increasingly referred to the dub music, and produced more pieces on Main Street in collaboration with Paul St. Hilaire (Tikiman). Since then they have consistently continued this development and founded the labels Burial Mix and Rhythm & Sound. In particular, the publications on Rhythm & Sound show a significant influence of the reggae mode of production.
With the founding of the label Imbalance (1993) and Chain Reaction (1995) both offered other artists such as the Finn Vladislav Delay a platform for the release of experimental techno pieces. Since his appearance with Tikiman 2008 in Senegal Ernestus is interested in the African music genre Mbalax. Since 2012 he runs the label Ndagga, on which appeared mainly the publications of the band Jeri-Jeri.
