Xiu Xiu

Since its inception in 2002, Xiu Xiu has gained cult status in experimental music circles with its unmistakably queer portraits of extremes of violence and beauty. Its leader and sole permanent member is Jamie Stewart, who writes unabashedly aggressive, confessional music that is perversely catchy in the most accessible moments of their discography (Women as Lovers, Oh No) and at its most challenging (Angel Guts, A Promise) takes the listener on disturbing journeys through naturalistic landscapes of pain.

Since 20090, Xiu Xiu's second member is multi-instrumentalist Angela Seo; the band's line-up has also included Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica (Swans), and currently features David Kendrick (Sparks, Devo). The group's sound features eclectic influences, ranging from contemporary classical and Asian folk music to the aggressive fringes of post-punk like The Birthday Party or Suicide; visual culture is also an important reference point for its aesthetic, from Joan Chen's film Xiu Xiu, which lent the project its name, to Twin Peaks, whose soundtrack Xiu Xiu recorded on the album Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. The group's thirteenth album, Ignore Grief, is due for release in March 2023.
