Monster Magnet

The New Jersey group Monster Magnet was, alongside like-minded contemporaries like Kyuss and Masters of Reality, instrumental for the development of stoner rock. Formed in 1989 and helmed since by guitarist, singer and only constant member Dave Wyndorf, Monster Magnet released their debut Spine of God in 1991, just in time to clash with the grunge era incoming from the other side of the country—perhaps too metal for the 1990s, the band's early efforts failed to gain commercial traction, instead forging a path straight to cult status. It was their third record, 1995's Dopes to Infinity, that won Monster Magnet broad recognition—with its lead single Negasonic Teenage Warhead, a takedown of grunge so angsty that it ended up being grunge, becoming an MTV staple and eventually lending its name to a Marvel superhero. Monster Magnet have released nine studio albums since, many featuring cover songs.
