Huun Huur Tu

The Huun Huur Tu ensemble comes from the Siberian city of Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva, an autonomous republic of the Russian Federation. Tuva has become legendary among throat singers – the indigenous inhabitants of the Siberian taiga have been singing in this way since time immemorial. In throat singing, one singer can sing two or three notes at the same time. He uses aliquot sounds, which he achieves through a special vocal technique that selectively expands the natural harmony of the voice. Huun Huur Tu accompany their singing with traditional musical instruments.

The group was founded in 1992. Its goal has become the revival of ancient traditions, resurrecting old and forgotten songs, but the members of Huun Huur Tu are not only dedicated to traditional music, they also incorporate other elements. The group represents the most famous genre of Tuvan music, xöömei (throat singing). Its performances can be compared to a lexicon of musical imitation, in which the sounds of nature are mimetically translated into musical images.
