Kunsthalle im Lipsiusbau

In Dresden, between the Frauenkirche and the Brühlscher Terrasse, a magnificent house for the arts was built in the 19th century. Today, the imposing building, which is overseen by the Dresden State Art Collections, is a venue for special exhibitions and the examination of contemporary art.

The richly decorated building complex was named "Lipsiusbau" after its creator, the architecture professor Constantin Lipsius. In addition to the Art Academy, it housed the exhibition building of the Saxon Art Association. Sensational art exhibitions had been held here for decades. For example, the painters of the newly founded artists' group "Brücke" had been represented at presentations of the Kunstverein since 1905. After its partial destruction in 1945, the exhibition building remained unused for decades. The reconstruction under the auspices of the Saxon State Ministry of Finance was completed in 2005.
