HD Substance

Luis Rozalén aka HD Substance has been making electronic music for almost all of his life, since he got a Depeche Mode single in 1981. He spent his teenage years surrounded by music, getting a drum kit at the age of fifteen and playing in several bands and projects. At the age of seventeen, he finally discovered drum machines and synthesizers.

Rozalén's first electronic output was synth pop, that later evolved to EBM and industrial sounds inspired by the late 80s. In 1990, after a trip to London, he discovered the acid house and rave phenomenon, which led him to discover his passion for techno.

In 1995 he released his first track as HD Substance through Esplendor Geometrico's Geometrik Records imprint. In 1996 his debut album, Eleven, appears through another cult imprint, Stereophonic Elephant Dance Recordings, with several vinyl EPs and 1998's Cancer Pop album following.

At the time, he had already become a regular at festivals like Sónar, Benicassim or Festimad and a resident of Soma Experimental Club from 1996 to 2000.

Meanwhile, he had studied journalism at University an in 1993 founded the first Spanish magazine specializing in electronic music, Undersounds.

He began the 2000s with his Atlas Records project, teaming up with other producers to release ten records. After the project came to an end, he began exploring digital opportunities and released four entire albums through net labels like Miga Records, disappeared from popular media and started digging deeply in underground music and concentrated on his residency at Madrid's Cassette Club.

In 2009 he released another full-length album, Hardware that led him to perform in Detroit's The Works club in 2010 and become a regular of the venue.

In 2018, HD Substance celebrated his 30th anniversary in electronic music. He keeps performing all over the globe, constantly releasing new techno tracks, teaching workshops and writing for different electronic music platforms, while running his own Subtl. imprint.
