The KW – Institute for Contemporary Art is a laboratory, that participates in the development of national and international contemporary art through exhibitions, events, cooperations with artists and other institutions, as well as commissions. The KW was founded in the 1990s by Klaus Biesenbach, alongside with a group of young art enthusiasts and opened in the premises of a former margarine factory, in Berlin-Mitte. The fast development of the KW into an international centre of contemporary art mostly happened due to its unique location and building, as well as its artistic program and its many collaborations with other international institutions. Especially its close connection to the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York helped the KW in its growth and reputation. In 1997 the KW founded the Berlin Biennale for contemporary art that took place for the ninth time in 2016.
