Today, the adjective “cult” has become worn out and lost its meaning, but few bands except Xiu Xiu fully represent the word. Founded in 2002, the band became a vehicle for the uncompromising and uncomfortably personal music of Jamie Stewart, a multi-instrumentalist residing in Los Angeles and the entourage of his collaborators, both studio and stage. During this time Xiu Xiu gained a large group of initiated fans all over the world, for whom the name means not just music, but a lifestyle. Dark, sometimes even extreme image of the band and an original approach to constructing songs (post-punk, avant-pop, electronics or noise are all to be found in the group’s works) made the band recognizable all over the world, at the same time keeping consistently on the sidelines and following their own path. Xiu Xiu will return to Poland to promote the latest work Girl with Basket of Fruit, which is planned to be released in February 2019. It’s a return to more brutal sounds compared to its predecessor, Forget from 2017. The album is full of tension, sadness and anger – feelings that have permanently penetrated the life of the masses in recent times. The album is complemented by guest performances by Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Devin Hoff and Haitian drummers Emmanuel Obi and Ayo Okafor. Xiu Xiu’s 2019 concert incarnation will consist of the trio: Stewart, Thor Harris (ex-Swans) and Jordan Gieger (Minus Story/Shearwater).
