Fire! Orchestra
Fire! Orchestra was formed as an extension of the trio Fire!, active since 2009 and led by a key figure in European free jazz, saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. The group—currently comprising seventeen instrumentalists, including the drummer of hardcore punk outfit Refused, David Sandström, members of avant-folk act Tape and post-rock band Tonbruket—draws on noise, psych rock and free improv to develop a new, maximalist approach to improvised music, reminiscent of 1960s attempts to merge jazz and modern classical by artists such as Charles Mingus. Fire! Orchestra debuted in 2013 with the album Exit!; since then they have released six more albums, including a performance of Krzysztof Penderecki's Actions and their latest Echoes from 2023, a two-hour release produced by avant-garde king Jim O'Rourke.
