Daniel Pešta: Nulová gravitace

Artist Daniel Pešta’s conceptual project Gravitation Zero was made in 2011 for the Center for Persecuted Art in the German town of Solingen as an homage to famous choreographer Pina Bausch, who was active at the nearby Tanztheater Wuppertal.

The duplicated concrete torsos of indeterminate beings are frozen in unassumingly demure movement, with the right hand symbolically pointing to the heart and the left hand to the groin. Floating in front of the figures are transparent illuminated faces inside which simple red strings represent the life-giving circulation of blood. The only differences between the faces are minor nuances in expression.

The conceptual choreography of the figures’ placement hints at the relationship between dance and the visual arts, although Pešta consciously avoids any references to the literal nature of dance. How the works are perceived is up to the viewer’s imagination and personal interpretation; the project remains emotionally plastic, without any inherent content.

Daniel Pešta is a multimedia artist who experiments using the entire spectrum of artistic tools. His works can be found at numerous leading international museums of contemporary art. In 2013 and 2015, he exhibited among other places at the Venice Biennale. Gravitation Zero is being presented at the National Theatre’s New Stag on the occasion of Daniel Pešta’s exhibition Nocturnal Head Records, which – after last year’s premiere at the Palazzo Bembo in Venice – is being shown in an expanded version at the White Gallery as part of the Smetana’s Creative Litomyšl festival.
