Air Waves
Let's get it straight: the new and third Air Waves album is a big hit. While Nicole Scheit has been broadcasting from Brooklyn's rather unpretentious side for some years now, Warriors (Western Vinyl) is yet another masterpiece of intimate viewing, queer identity negotiation, and fragile pop sketches: Scheit plays over 11 songs free from the vocabulary of subdued songwriting rhetoric , and with her slightly husky voice, finds a wonderful counterpart in the synthesized surfaces of well-informed '80s yacht pop. What sometimes sounds like Thalia Zedek of Zoot Woman, is always lively and repetitive, has almost continuous radio potential and still never breaks with the old indie lip-service. Great songwriting for those in love with Cat Power, Frankie Cosmos, Beach House.
