Nirvana
Nirvana was an American grunge band formed in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington. They became one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. The founding members were Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals) and Krist Novoselic (bass guitar). Pat Smear was the third guitarist and Dave Grohl would finally establish himself as their drummer, after a number of different failed drummers.
In 1989, Nirvana recorded their first studio album, Bleach, but still did not belong to the mainstream of popular music. The turning point came in 1991 when they published their new single titled Smells Like Teen Spirit to the album Nevermind. This song reached the top spot in the charts and opened the way to Nirvana's fame. The third and final studio album was released in 1993 and was named In Utero; it included later popular songs such as Rape Me and Heart-Shaped Box.
Nirvana broke up after the suicide of frontman Kurt Cobain in April 1994. Since its formation. the band sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Nirvana's grunge musical style is still represented by similar bands such as Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
