Vladimír Franz

Vladimír Franz is a Czech composer, painter, university scholar and occasional journalist, poet and playwright.

He represents a significant personality of the Czech cultural scene. He is a six-time winner of the Alfred Radok Award (1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007), the Divadelní noviny Award (2001) and the OSA Award (2012). He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Charles University and simultaneously studied painting privately with Karel Souček and Andrej Bělocvětov, composition with Vladimír Sommer and Miroslav Reichl, as well as art history and music history. As a painter, he has held more than one hundred solo exhibitions at home and abroad. He has exhibited in galleries on three continents.

His musical output is particularly extensive. He mainly composes incidental music, for which he has received a number of important awards. So far, he has composed incidental music for more than 180 theatre performances for our leading theatres (the National Theatre in Prague, the National Theatre in Brno, the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague, the Municipal Theatre in Zlín, the West Bohemian Theatre in Cheb, etc.). However, he also focuses on the composition of classical, film and radio music. He is the author of major operas, symphonic compositions, orchestral pieces, ballets and oratorios.

For several years he has been cooperating with the Czech Radio, specifically with the Vltava station, for which he prepares the successful programme Sedmé nebe, where he focuses on important composers in the field of classical music and analyses their works. Since 1991 he has been teaching (Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts, Film Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology, etc.). In 2004 he was appointed professor. In 2012 he was a candidate for the election for the office of the President of the Czech Republic.
