The Snow Queen

Gerda and Kay are best friends. But everything quickly changes when Kay gets a splinter in his eye. He rejects Gerda and his other friends as being simple, childish, and silly and instead listens to the seductive voice of the icy Snow Queen. As she searches for Kay, Gerda discovers herself in the eerily beautiful realm of the Flower Queen, the mundane golden court of the Princess, and the perilous and dark cave of the Robber Queen. It is here that she learns to defend her friends and herself. She finally makes it to the frigid north of Lapland with assistance from the Crow and the Reindeer, and with the true power of friendship she rescues Kay from the Snow Queen's grasp.

For many years, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales have been a staple of kids' bedrooms, inspiring both writers and composers. From November 2022 until January 2023, the Deutsche Oper Berlin will transform into the arctic realm of the Snow Queen. Along with one actress, three singers, and five musicians, composer Samuel Penderbayne, librettist Christian Schönfelder, and director Brigitte Dethier embark on Gerda's journey. Together, they will narrate a road trip movie with humor and awe. This musical theater will include musical flowers, a croaking clarinet, a tuba reindeer, and the eerily beautiful synthesiser world of the Snow Queen, to name just a few of the ingredients.
