Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Among the largest universal museums in the world are the National Museums in Berlin. They are an institution of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) and were founded in 1823 by the Prussian King Frederick William III (until 1918 under the name Königliche Museen zu Berlin). The 19 museum buildings collect works of European and non-European art, archaeology, and ethnology from nearly all nations, cultures, and periods.

The National Museums in Berlin have two main sites, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Museum Island in Berlin-Mitte and the Kulturforum in Berlin-Tiergarten.
