Sounds Tasty: A musical Wine Tasting Experience

Music can influence how one experiences flavour – and vice versa. In this informal hour people will explore how people's senses can become a way to experience music in a new and different way. What happens in one's consciousness when they hear two melodies at once? Tasting happens in the brain, not in the mouth. What happens when one flavour melts together with another?

What pitches correspond to sour, salty and sweet? Three short pieces of music by three different composers will be combined with three different wines. People will take their time and listen to how the flavours and music develop together and separately. Janice Wang (wine expert) and Anna Guaita (pianist) will guide guests on this journey.

Annabel Guaita is a concert pianist with an artistic PhD in music. She has developed the concept listener’s pilot, a method for presentation and exploration to help the audience discover their own potential as a listener. She is currently associate professor at the Grieg Academy in Bergen. In 2011 she released her first solo-CD, Altra Beltà – The other Beauty with piano works by Fartein Valen, Schönberg, Berg and Webern at the label Lawo Classics. Her second recording, Identities was released in 2022 and includes piano works by the Norwegian composers Edvard Grieg, Harald Sæverud and Ketil Hvoslef. During the years 2016- 2018 she held the position as the Head of Education at the Edvard Grieg Museum and the Composer’s homes in Bergen, Norway.

Janice Wang is a wine educator and assistant professor at the University of Aarhus where she works with multisensory research. This involves how people's senses affect others and how elements in the surroundings such as scent, light and sound affect one's taste experience. She has a background from experimental psychology and computer science but is also a WSET Diploma holder and Master of Wine student.
