Songs of Wagner with Markéta Cukrová

Robert Jindra, the orchestra's principal guest conductor, has invited the leading Czech mezzo-soprano Markéta Cukrová. Together with her, he will present to the audience the famous Wesendonck Lieder, songs that Richard Wagner wrote to texts by Mathilde Wesendonck while he was working on the opera Tristan und Isolde. At the Convent of St. Agnes, the work will be performed in an original instrumentation created for chamber orchestra by Hans Werner Henze, one of the most important German composers of the last century. The evening will open with Paul Hindemith's Concerto for Woodwinds, Harp and Orchestra, featuring leading players of the Radio Symphony as soloists, and will close with Dmitri Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony. The famous work, which the Soviet composer composed as String Quartet No. 8 and incorporated a cryptogram of his name in the form of the notes D E flat C-H, has been arranged for string orchestra by the Russian conductor and violist Rudolf Barshai, a founding member of the legendary Borodin Quartet.

Programme:

  • Paul Hindemith: Concerto for Woodwinds, Harp and Orchestra
  • Richard Wager/Hans Werner Henze: Wesendonck-Lieder
  • Dmitri Shostakovich: Chamber Symphony. Op. 110a
