Moravian Theatre Olomouc

Moravian Theatre Olomouc is situated in one of the oldest theatre buildings in this country (opened in 1830). It consists of three artistic sections (opera/operetta, drama, and ballet).

In 1996 the then director of the theatre Václav Kožušník (1996–2010) initiated the birth of the Flora Theatre Festival – a project that started as a regional festival of Moravian theatres but worked its way up to be one of the international theatre festivals organized since 2009 by Divadlo Konvikt. The Moravian Theatre in Olomouc is an integral part of cultural life in Olomouc and the Olomouc Region. It aspires to become an important cultural center transcending the borders of the region and the Czech Republic. As the only theater in central and eastern Moravia, it has three artistic ensembles and its own orchestra.

Its stage regularly hosts plays, ballets, operas, operettas, musicals, dance galas, and fairy tales. The dramaturgy is characterized by diversity and openness – in addition to classical titles, the theater also offers lesser-known or original productions and modern adaptations.

A repertoire that entertains, moves, and surprises

Among the most successful plays in recent years are Rok na vsi (A Year in the Country) directed by Janka Ryšánek Schmiedtová, Manon Lescaut by Hana Mikolášková, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest directed by Pavel Khek, the cult comedy When the Lights Go Out (by Roman Vencl and Michaela Doleželová), and David Drábek's original play Sherlock Holmes: The Murders of Bearded Women.

Dance audiences were captivated by Bolero & Carmen by Italian choreographers Riccardo De Nigris and Giorgio Madia, the spectacular ballet Ivan the Terrible (Libor Vaculík), The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the poetic Solo for Three, for which dancer Sergio Méndez Romero won the 2022 Thalia Award.

The opera and music section of the audience appreciated, for example, the productions Nabucco, Bluebeard's Castle directed by Daniela Špinar, Rusalka (directed by CABANI) and the musical Hello, Dolly! Young audiences loved the musical fairy tales Miniopery by Uhlíř and Svěrák, in which children—singers and dancers—perform alongside adults.

The theater actively works to develop a young audience and build a new generation of theatergoers. The MDO Atelier platform organizes discussions with creators, thematic workshops, ballet workshops, and open rehearsals for the general public. Educational programs on selected productions are prepared for high school students.

From June to August, the Moravian Theater organizes the Moravian Theater Summer open-air festival, whose program includes popular comedies and other accompanying events. The festival also includes open-air performances in surrounding villages. In recent years, the theater has also been actively focusing on participating in prestigious domestic and international theater and music festivals.
