Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum

The Marienfelde Refugee Center in Berlin-Marienfelde was one of three camps in Western Germany that organized the emergency reception procedure for Germans from the GDR and Eastern Berlin. Today it is the central museum in Germany for the topics escape and departure from the GDR.

1,35 from 4 million people that left the GDR in direction Federal Republic between 1949 and 1990 passed the Marienfelde Refugee Center, which was founded in 1953. Here they went through the necessary process to get a stay permission for the FRG and Western Berlin.

Today an exhibition reminds of reasons, development and consequences of the German-German refugee movement. With the permanent exhibtion, a wide educational and event program, special temporary exhibitions and science projects the memorial museum provides a broad offer for documentation and explanation of the history of the German separation and the refugee movement from the GDR.
