Male
Male was founded in Düsseldorf in December 1976 by Jürgen Engler, Bernward Malaka and Stefan Schwaab. After their first show at Ratinger Hof in March 1977, they played at a few historically significant festivals of the burgeoning punk scene (including the opening of the SO36 in Berlin and the legendary Hamburg punk festivals Into The Future and In die Zukunft) in 1978 . Their only LP Zensur & Zensur was released in 1979, the first purely German-language punk album; the single Clever and Smart at Rondo followed later. In May 1980 they accompanied the British punk band The Clash on a concert on their tour through Germany. Under the name Vorsprung they produced a final single with a new sound, that had already announced itself on Clever and Smart. Afterwards their paths separated. Engler and Malaka founded Die Krupps, while Schwaab and Claus Ritter (drums) continued to pursue the new wavy sound under the name Freunde der Nacht. Although Male only existed for a short time and only made a few publications and performances during their existence, it was one of the most influential bands of German punk. After a brief reunion in 1990, Male have been performing in an almost original line-up since 2002.
