Prison Religion

The Richmond, Virginia duo Prison Religion bring hip-hop and club music to sonic and performative extremes that recall hardcore and power electronics shows, blending genre conventions to shreds at full speed. After debuting with the 2016 trap-influenced EP Cage With Mirrored Bars, they barged into the then-current deconstructed club explosion with their debut for genre mainstay Halcyon Veil, 2018's O Fucc Im on the Wrong Planet; the release was followed by a remix album featuring the likes of Rabit, Endgame and Swan Meat. Their 2019 LP Beachhead saw them move into an increasingly noise-influenced and eclectic direction, a turn they completed with 2022's Hard Industrial B.O.P., described by Pitchfork as foregrounding the brittle noise and teeth-rattling sound design that has always been an unsettling undercurrent in their music.
