Zeurítia

„When I was growing up I was exposed to a great variety of music,“ says Vendula Šmoldasová, a.k.a. Zeurítia. At home, they would listen to folk and country music, but also to Frank Sinatra and traditional folk songs. Just like perhaps everybody else, she liked to listen to anything that was played on the radio. Later in life, she became fond of classical music and began to discover the beauty of the opera and belcanto singing. „For quite some time, it appeared that I would become a soprano opera singer,“ she says. „I had a great teacher, Ms. Helena Havlíková, who devoted a lot of time and effort to preparing me for the entrance exams at the Classical Music Conservatory in Prague; however, in the end, my life took a different turn and I was pulled toward jazz.“ She attended Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory instead and the more she was learning about jazz the more it attracted her, especially the recordings of musicians such as Louis Armstrong (that’s where it all started for her) and Billie Holliday. However, it didn’t mean that she´d turn her back on classical music. After she graduated from the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory, she extended her education at the Jazz College where she had many opportunities to sing in public. She also got a chance to perform in Prague music clubs as a blues singer in the band of the Chicago expatriate Rene Trossman. „This exposure was instrumental to my involvement with the local community of jazz musicians,“ she adds. „Its natural leader, NajPonk, provided a lot of support to me and, most importantly, a steady stream of amazing records.“

Also the Jazz College was crucial for her musical development. She had the honor of learning from David Dorůžka, Jaromír Honzák, Filip Gondolán and many others. She also met a lot of brilliant schoolmates there. Her first important bossa nova band was founded in 2007 in a quartet setting with acoustic guitar, bass and drums. In Summer 2008 they recorded their first eponymous CD featuring mostly bossa nova songs in brazilian portuguese language. She started taking lessons with the great Polish jazz singer Aga Zaryan at the International Prague Jazz Workshop in 2008. While in the New York City in March 2009, she took lessons from Peter Eldridge (Manhattan School of Music professor, New York Voices member).

In October 2014 she put out her second record Weightless along with her husband and soulmate Libor Šmoldas. Together they not only form a lively creative tandem, but raise two beautiful kids and passionately practice raw food diet as well. – Translated by Automatic service
