Wielka Zbrojownia
The headquarters of the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts in what used to be the city's arsenal. The original purpose of the building is evidenced by the tops of the gables of the western façade—obelisks and statues, the hardware ornamentation, but above all the spheres exploding with tin flames. It is located in the very centre of the historic Main Town and is an unsurpassed example of a work of Dutch Mannerist architecture. It stands at the intersection of two tourist thoroughfares at the point where the oldest merchant route ran. The two towers on the side of Piwna Street proudly interrupt the sequence of front elevations—accentuating the exception to the rule and the right to special considerations. Since 1954, it has been the seat of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, which was moved from Sopot and renamed the Academy by the President of the Republic of Poland in 1996. It houses the Faculties of Painting, Architecture and Design, the Rector's Office, the Library and the university administration.
