Volksbühne Berlin

Volksbühne is a theater with a rich tradition, located in Berlin-Mitte. It understands itself as an urban theatre without borders.

At the moment, the artistic directors are Chris Dercon as the intendant and Marietta Piekenbrock as the program manager.

The program itself combines theater, dance, performance, music, cinema, visual arts and digital culture in one spot. The main principle of Volksbühne is to process the contemporary and to shape the future of theater with new connections between the different forms, disciplines and practices. Thereby, the vision of an open and cosmopolitan society is in the foreground. The artists at Volksbühne come from Berlin, Europe and all over the world.

The building at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, in which the Big Stage and the two venues Red and Green Salon are situated, was built in 1914 by the architect Oskar Kaufmann and offers space for up to 800 spectators. Besides, Volksbühne is planning to open a satellite theater at the historical airport Tempelhof and to built the experimental platform Fullscreen, that aims to reflect the relationship between art, society and digitalism.
