Toro y Moi

Toro y Moi is Chaz Bear, an American singer and producer who is cited as the most important name in chillwave, along with Washed Out and Neon Indian. Emerging in the early 2010s, this retrofuturistic micro-genre combined 80s-reminiscent pop songs with psychedelic, dreamlike production to create a uniquely nostalgic sound that influenced endless artists and defined the aesthetic of that era. Like most musicians classified as chillwave, Toro y Moi never identified with this (then widely criticised) movement and, over the course of his career, took a turn towards a less stylised palette: his latest album Mahal (2022) is an polished psych-funk effort, approaching the summer sound with a laid-back and humorous approach.
