Tormentor

The work of the Hungarian band Tormentor, formed in 1986, was instrumental in defining the sound of black metal: building on German thrash and acts like Bathory and Venom, they made the genre more feral and unhinged than it ever was before. Tormentor recorded their first album, Anno Domini, in 1988, but were unable to release it until the end of communist rule in Hungary. The album reached Norway through the tape-trading community; the group's frontman Atilla Csihar was invited to join Mayhem after the suicide of Dead, contributing vocals to their legendary De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Tormentor reappeared at the turn of the millenium, coming back with the chaotically experimental Recipe Ferrum in 2001; after a second hiatus, which saw Csihar work with the drone metal legends Sunn O))), they returned to touring in 2017.
