Kenny Garrett

The Detroit-born jazz saxophonist Kenny Garrett first came to prominence in the 1980s, playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard before debuting as a leader with 1984's Introducing Kenny Garrett. He's released sixteen albums since, as well as collaborated with the likes of Marcus Miller, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, John McLaughlin and Chick Corea. Garrett's work is rooted firmly in the post-bop tradition, with plenty of modal compositions and occasional forays into free jazz; his catalogue also includes notable nods to East Asian traditional music. His most recent releases focus on the roots of Black American music, examining influences from West African and Afro-Cuban traditions.
