Elena Sonenshine

Singer, arranger, lyricist, composer. Born in Brno, she moved to Prague after graduating from high school, where she first studied at the School of Social and Legal Studies and then continued her studies at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory.

Elena’s involvement in modern jazz dates back to 1992, when she began performing in Prague jazz clubs as a guest singer with various trios and quartets. However, she soon formed her own band called Jocose Jazz with the instrumentation of guitar, vibraphone/piano, double bass and drums. This group primarily plays her own compositions, interspersed with classical standards in original arrangements, and jazz versions of folk songs.

In the Czech Republic, she recorded songs with Felix Slováček’s big band and sent them to Boston University’s Berklee College of Music, where Elena was awarded a scholarship to study music and voice. There she also took private lessons with Bob Stoloff, who was in a quartet with Bobby McFerrin.

Elena's CD You Go to My Head was played on American radio and held the top 50 most played jazz CDs in the entire US for four weeks. She even knocked Diana Krall off the charts for a few weeks with You and the night and the music. In the Czech Republic she performed as part of the Jazz at the Castle series. She also performed at the Prague Spring festival.
